A Couple of Dead Horse Stories:

A clergyman awoke one morning to find a dead donkey in his front yard. He had no idea how it got there, but he knew he had to get rid of it. So he called the sanitation department, the health department, and several other agencies, but no one seemed to be able to help him. In desparation the good reverend called the mayor and asked him what should be done.

The mayor must have been having a bad day, "why bother me?", he asked. "You're a clergyman, it's your job to bury the dead."

The reverend lost his cool, "yes," he snapped, "but I thought I should at least notify his next of kin."

A Leland Dead Horse Story

Frank Carollo , I know you know him or some of his kin. He and I have been friends for as long as I can remember. While living in Leland when we were much , much younger, we played really bad tricks and stunts on each other.

He sold me my first shot gun when I started hunting and after the purchase told every one, including, me that the barrel had been bent and that it would not shoot straight. Well sure enough , I finally had to sell it and get me a new one. Funny though the new one shot crooked too. Well that's kind of like the stuff we did to each other.

One day my friend, Sim Dulaney, who was moving that day, called me. He was living in the Old Sligo House out from town and he had a problem. As they were loading his fine show horse, it died. Well there he was with a dead horse and the movers were ready to go. He asked me if I would take care of it for him. I promised I would.

Well I had given Frank a horse several months before that. My daughter had outgrown it and I was tired of taking care of it. Frank was glad to get it and told me he liked horses. Well, the first thing that entered my mind was how I could con Frank into moving that dead horse.

"Frank!, this is Lawrence". " Yes" he said, " So What". "Do you want a horse for free"? I asked. "What do I have to do "? he inquired. I told him about the Dulaney's moving and that he didn't want the horse any more but I did not tell him that it was dead. " All you have to do is get it off of his property today" He wants no money. Frank said" I know the horse and you have a deal." " Deal." I replied.

Well I was besides myself. This would make me even with Frank for the shotgun deal and a whole lot of other stuff he had pulled on me. I couldn't wait to hear from him. I only wished that I could have been there to witness it first hand.

Well I didn't hear anything that night but I was going to play it cool and not say anything. After two days of not hearing anything ,I could stand it no longer. I went out to his store and when we were alone I asked him how he liked his horse. He replied" Oh yes, I have been meaning to call and thank you wor what you did for me. I sold that horse to the dog food company in Greenville for $150.00 dollars and they came and got it that same day." He did'nt even crack a smile. I'll never get even with Frank.
